Many parents are now very concerned about their children's eyesight, fearing that their children are nearsighted, farsighted, or amblyopic. For parents, during the crucial period when children are under great academic pressure and heavy workloads, choosing suitable desks and chairs and protective lighting to protect their children's eyes is very important! So, what aspects should parents consider when choosing a desk lamp for their children to protect their eyesight? Precautions for Choosing an Eye-Protection Desk Lamp
Many parents are now very concerned about their children's eyesight, fearing that their children may have myopia, hyperopia, amblyopia, etc. For parents, during the crucial period when children are under great pressure from studying and have heavy workloads, choosing suitable desks and chairs and protective lighting to protect their children's eyes is very important! So, what aspects should parents consider when choosing a desk lamp for their children's reading and homework to protect their eyesight?

  First is the appropriate illuminance

According to the recommendations in the "Japanese Lighting Handbook," the illuminance of a desk work surface should be 300~750 lx (lux). Excessive brightness will cause the pupils to be unable to control the light entering the eyes, potentially damaging the lens and retina; excessive dimness will cause the ciliary muscles to remain tense, and sustained tension may lead to myopia and high intraocular pressure. For energy-saving lamps, approximately 11W~18W is recommended, depending on personal comfort.

  Second is uniform light distribution

According to the national standard "Performance Requirements for Reading and Writing Desk Lamps" (GBT9743-2008), the recommended uniformity of the work surface is <3.0. If the brightness of the work surface is uneven, the eyes will constantly switch between light and dark, causing the ciliary muscles to relax and tense alternately, always in motion; when the ciliary muscle fatigue cannot be recovered, it will cause myopia, high intraocular pressure, and other diseases.

  Third, eliminate direct glare

Sudden exposure of the eyes to strong light may damage the retina, causing temporary blindness. According to the national standard "Performance Requirements for Reading and Writing Desk Lamps" (GBT9743-2008), when observing at an eye height of 400mm and a parallel distance of 600mm, the light source of the desk lamp should not be visible. Therefore, truly eye-protective lamps need to have lenses, grids, and other anti-glare measures to prevent direct light from forming glare; exposed bulbs are absolutely unacceptable.

  Fourth, no flicker

When the eyes can detect flicker, the ciliary muscles relax and tense alternately, always in motion; when ciliary muscle fatigue cannot be recovered, it will cause myopia, high intraocular pressure, and other diseases. According to the CIE international standard "Indoor Workplace Lighting Guide S800-2001," the flicker frequency of the desk lamp should be higher than 25000 rpm. However, it should be noted that high-frequency electronic ballasts can cause electromagnetic radiation and electromagnetic pollution, so desk lamps that meet the national EMI/EMC electromagnetic radiation testing standards should be selected.

  Fifth, high color rendering

Many light sources can cause objects to appear discolored. Severe discoloration can have many adverse effects on the eyes over time; therefore, a reasonable light source should have a high color rendering rate. According to the CIE international standard "Indoor Workplace Lighting Guide S800-2001," the color rendering index of a desk lamp should be greater than 80%. When purchasing, pay attention to the markings on the fluorescent tube: rr for daylight color, rn for warm white, these two colors can protect the eyes; rl is cool white, and rb is white, which do not have a protective effect.

Sixth, color temperature close to natural light

According to the CIE international standard "Indoor Workplace Lighting Guide S800-2001," a desk lamp color temperature of 3300K~5300K is recommended. If you read under high or low color temperature light for a long time, the eyes will not receive enough light waves; only some of the light waves in the spectrum are received. High color temperature light waves will cause the eye muscles to be in an excited state, easily leading to fatigue, eye strain, high intraocular pressure, myopia, etc.; low color temperature light will cause the eyes to always be in a relaxed state, which is not conducive to the development of eye muscles, leading to amblyopia and other diseases.

  Seventh, ultraviolet filtering

Currently, most desk lamps use fluorescent bulbs; aged fluorescent bulbs will produce ultraviolet radiation after prolonged use. The accumulated intensity of ultraviolet radiation can cause aging of the eyeball and lead to ophthalmic diseases. Considering long hours of desk work, a desk lamp with a UV filter in the lampshade is even better.

Precautions for selecting eye-protection desk lamps
  Eighth, reduce reflected glare

When reading coated paper, there is often mirror-like glare, which we call reflected glare. The brightness of reflected glare is very high. Entering the eyes may damage the lens and retina. Long-term exposure to reflected glare pollution can cause teenagers to easily develop myopia and increase the likelihood of cataracts in older adults. Adding a polarizing film to the desk lamp is a good solution; pay attention to whether this design is available when purchasing.
